Artist Notes: I continue to be drawn to isolated structures within the expansive western landscape—particularly those that seem to carry a sense of history and solitude. In this case, a small church stands alone on the prairie as storm clouds gather and rain approaches in the distance.

This is the fourth church in a series I’ve recently painted. I find myself returning to these structures not only because of their visual presence, but because of what they seem to represent. There is something quiet and contemplative about a solitary building surrounded by such an expansive landscape.

For me, the process of painting these places offers a kind of solitude and sanctuary. Perhaps that is why I continue to return to them. It is my hope that something of that feeling comes through in the finished work and that viewers might find their own sense of quiet and reflection in it.
